Calgary Rezoning Public Submissions Map

The Problem

Community-level zoning decisions in Calgary have become increasingly polarized, with limited public access to accurate, neutral data. Politicians and advocacy groups often reference partial or selective statistics, making it difficult for citizens, city planners, and policymakers to objectively understand how different communities are responding to zoning reappeals. This lack of transparent, accessible information erodes trust in the decision-making process and fuels misinformation.

The Solution

Our web app provides an open, real-time view of how Calgary communities are voting on zoning reappeals, presenting data in a clear, unbiased, and interactive format. The platform empowers citizens, city planners, and decision-makers with transparent insights, allowing them to engage in evidence-based discussions and make informed choices. By making accurate data accessible to everyone, the app helps shift the conversation from political narratives to community-driven understanding and accountability.

1. Voting summary
Offers an at-a-glance summary of the total votes, community representation, and submissions.

2. Map/Table View
Presents two options for viewing voting data.

3. Community View
By hovering/tapping on a set of numbers, a modal displays the community name, submissions, and percentage of residents the votes represent.

4. R-CG Toggle
Enabling the toggle displays the existing zoned R-CG zones in Calgary which could be affected by the zoning repeal.

5. Equity Overlays
Equity overlays offers a selection of overlays that display the percentage of communities affected by various demographics and social political factors such as average income, driving to work, households with kids, etc. These overlays allow viewers to determine how voting submissions may or may not be affected by these factors and how communities are being accurately represented.

Site impact

Since the site launched and was shared on LinkedIn, it’s gain a lot of traction. It also resulted in Serene speaking about the map on local radio to help spread awareness of the tool so Calgarians can educate themselves before speaking at the public rezoning hearing.
