Pixeltree created its own Calgary Rezoning Repeal website that collects raw data, then organizes and displays it in an easy-to-understand way so that citizens, city planners, and policymakers can access accurate insights and make informed, data-driven decisions.
In the lead-up to Calgary’s 2026 Rezoning Repeal, we observed that some councillors were selectively using data to shape narratives that favored certain demographics and communities. Since this decision impacts all Calgarians, we set out to make the underlying data transparent, accessible, and easy to understand for everyone.
We believe government decisions should be grounded in accurate data and that citizens deserve equal access to that information so they can form informed opinions and engage meaningfully in the discussion.
Facts or Feels? Section
When it comes to arguments and claims, whether it’s for or against a policy, peoples’ stances come down to three types;
Data-Referencing: Arguments based on objective facts like laws and existing policies.
Experience-Based: Claims based on what someone has seen or perceived first or second hand in day to day experiences.
Value-Based: Claims based on individuals’ personal beliefs and values; whether it’s for the common good or not.
The Facts of Feels? section collects the claims per position, analyzes the type of claim, and categorizes the total claims into one of the three types to help viewers understand where the positions are coming from and how valid they deem them to be.
Geographic Distribution
This section displays the voting stances per ward. This helps viewers understand how the various demographics across Calgary may inform their position on the zoning repeal and demonstrates how strongly some communities may weigh on a “city-wide” matter. It’s important to understand large voter-ships may only represent vocal minorities within a few communities as opposed to evenly representing Calgary as a whole.
The claims page organizes all the claims made by speakers for each of the repeal positions; for, against, and with conditions.
